What Is the Next Iteration of Live Events?

Can it be contained within 4 walls and confined to the bodies and minds of those who physically attend? Is it simply people on stage talking down at people on chairs? Is it a big-screen, graphic-laden, one-way projection of ideas? ... Or is it something else, something evolutionary?   Event Horizons is a first-of-its-kind conference taking place in the Grand Ballroom of Webster Hall, the landmark venue where stereo was discovered in 1954, where U2 played its very first show in North America, and which has become a hub of the New York tech community. Event Horizons will have a unique, McLuhanesque, "Event within an Event" format reflecting its cutting-edge subject matter. Scheduled during the heart of Internet Week on June 4, 2009, from 11 am to 3 pm, Event Horizons will unfold in the very same room where, later that night, thousands of tech revelers will converge for the annual Digg bash, which will include a live broadcast of Diggnation. Some of the issues to be explored include:
  • How can technology be used to enhance the user experience?
  • What is the best run of show?
  • How can advertisers leverage an audience to fully deliver a brand message?
  • How can attendees interact with one another, with the host and with the rest of the world?
  • How can the host maximize the impact of the event, before, during, and after?
At a concert, conference, trade show, festival, mall, restaurant, business office or lobby, the experience that resonates is a combination of both physical and digital interactions. Host Box of Rain will explore the frontier of how video, mobile, SMS, RFID, social tools and Web 2.0 technologies can be seamlessly integrated into a live event. Event Horizons is an extraordinary opportunity to experience the best of high-definition, video-enabled event environments and to meet and learn from the people who are creating the future of digital interactive media. While the load-in and setup for Digg occurs all around, attendees will enjoy lunch, music, and video entertainment, and receive expert advice on how to maximize the value of technology within a live event.
